About me
Melissa Miller is a Reading Intervention Specialist at Ballard Elementary in Niles Community Schools, where she supports students and staff in implementing evidence-based literacy practices grounded in the Science of Reading. She leads data-driven WINN (What I Need Now) intervention blocks and Tier 3 intervention groups and has partnered closely with her RESA to design and refine systems that ensure all students receive targeted, explicit instruction. Through this work, her school has seen significant gains, including a substantial reduction in students performing well below benchmark. She also collaborates with teachers to strengthen Tier 1 and Tier 2 instruction, helping build sustainable, schoolwide literacy practices. She is deeply committed to the belief that all students can learn to read and that reading is a fundamental civil right.
Melissa holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Saginaw Valley State University and a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Teaching from Michigan State University and brings 20 years of experience in education, including 15 years in lower elementary classrooms.
