This interactive workshop explores a research-based approach to understanding and enhancing student motivation and engagement. Participants examine different modalities of engagement, the role of mental models, and key factors that influence motivation, including relationships, task design, and classroom climate. Emphasis is placed on “turning the engagement dial” through intentional instructional moves such as scaffolding, appropriate challenge, and meaningful feedback. Educators will apply evidence-based strategies to design learning experiences that foster curiosity, persistence, and belonging, ultimately developing actionable plans to sustain high levels of engagement for all learners.

Describe the key aspects of motivation.
Explain what "turns the dial" of motivation in my learners.
Develop tasks that foster, nurture, and sustain motivation and engagement in my classroom.
